A denture is a removable (you can take in and out of your mouth) replacement for missing teeth and surrounding gum tissue. They sit on your gums and help you chew, speak, and smile again
There are two types of Dentures:
- Full (complete) dentures used when all teeth are missing in the upper or lower jaw. They rest directly on your gums.
- Partial dentures used when some teeth are still present. They attach to your natural teeth using metal or resin clasps or other connectors
A denture is a removable dental appliance designed to replace missing teeth and restore oral function and aesthetics. Dentures can be full (replacing all teeth in an arch) or partial (replacing some missing teeth while preserving remaining natural teeth). They are typically made from acrylic, resin, or metal and are custom-fitted to ensure comfort and stability.
There are several types of dentures, each designed to meet different needs:
- Complete Dentures – These replace all teeth in either the upper or lower jaw. They rest on the gums and are removable.
- Partial Dentures – Used when some natural teeth remain, these dentures fill gaps and prevent shifting of existing teeth.
- Implant-Supported Dentures – These are anchored to dental implants, providing greater stability and preventing movement.
- Immediate Dentures – Placed right after tooth extraction, these temporary dentures help maintain function while the gums heal.
- Snap-In Dentures – These attach to implants using special connectors, offering a secure fit while remaining removable.
- Overdentures – Designed to fit over remaining natural teeth or implants, they provide additional support and comfort.
- Flexible Dentures – Made from softer materials, these are more comfortable and less likely to break compared to traditional acrylic dentures
Taking care of your dentures properly ensures their longevity and keeps your oral health in top shape. Here are some essential
maintenance tips:
- Daily Cleaning – Brush your dentures at least once a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive denture cleanser. Avoid regular toothpaste, as it can be too harsh and cause scratches.
- Soaking Overnight – Keep your dentures moist by soaking them in a denture-cleaning solution or lukewarm water overnight. This helps maintain their shape and prevents them from drying out.
- Handle with Care – When cleaning or removing your dentures, do so over a soft towel or a basin of water to prevent accidental damage if dropped.
- Avoid Hot Water – Never soak dentures in hot or boiling water, as it can warp their shape and affect their fit.
- Regular Dental Check-ups – Visit your dentist periodically to ensure your dentures fit well and to check for any necessary adjustments.
- Watch Your Diet – Avoid sticky or hard foods that may damage your dentures. Opt for softer foods that are easier to chew.
- Use Denture Adhesives Wisely – If needed, use denture adhesives sparingly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Ill-fitting dentures may require professional adjustments rather than relying on adhesive
