Bonding is a popular restorative dental treatment used to enhance the aesthetics of your natural smile. This treatment is often used to repair small cosmetic defects like filling gaps between teeth, covering up stains, or discolored teeth, and structural issues like cracks and chips.
This procedure is relatively simple and doesn’t require significant planning in advance. There is no anesthesia involved and the procedure is usually painless and quick, taking only about 30 to 60 minutes depending on the amount of bonding being applied.
A composite resin is used on the affected tooth or teeth. This is a durable plastic material which can be color-matched to the existing teeth for a more seamless effect. It is activated by ultraviolet light and has a putty-like consistency that makes it relatively easy to shape and maneuver in the mouth and then harden into place. After hardening, the shape can be further adjusted by filing.
To begin the process, the dentist cleans the teeth thoroughly. If there are any cavities to fill, they’re scraped clean of debris. The teeth are rinsed and made relatively dry. Then the dentist will lightly roughen up the surface and apply a conditioning liquid which helps the resin stick to the surface of the tooth and grip onto it securely.
After this, the resin is molded and sculpted over an adhesive gel that is placed on the tooth. The dentist takes particular time to match the existing shape and correct it naturally. After the resin has been applied, an LED light is used to harden it and bond it to the natural surface of the tooth. It is then polished to give you a fresh, new smile you can be proud of.
Bonding is an obvious improvement over unsightly silver amalgam fillings for a number of reasons. The material is closer in color and texture to the original tooth, meaning that it can be incorporated less obviously. Additionally, silver amalgam fillings are cheap and tend to be relatively low quality, while white bonding material is of a higher quality. With advancements in dental technology, bonding usually lasts for over 10 years and is unlikely to slip or come out of place like silver amalgam fillings are disposed to do.
