Over time, pigmented residue from food and beveragesbuilds up and is absorbed by the enamel, creating a stain. While coffee andcola are common tooth-staining culprits, any food or beverage with dark tanninscan result in tooth discoloration, including dark berries, fruit juices, andtomato-based sauces. Chemical compounds called chromogens give certain foodsand drinks their strong colour, and these compounds can stain our teeth. Foodsand drinks containing a substance called tannin can also cause staining. Acidscan wear down your teeth, increasing the chances of your teeth getting stained.Intrinsic stains cannot be removed, but they can be covered up with cosmeticoptions. Extrinsic stains can usually be removed with whitening. Professionalwhitening may be necessary for some deep, longstanding set-in stains.
